In this book sociologist Pınar Selek investigates military service as a "laboratory of masculinity", a compulsive  station on the way of ripening as a male.  Military service is an experience where the male identity has to be proved, defended and exposed each and every day in  all its dimensions.  Pınar Selek analyses and interprets in her study based on the narrations of  military service experiences of  many men  from different social conditions how this experience constructs male identity.
