Pınar Selek
Message of support from The Association Française de Sociologie (French Sociological Association, AFS), the Association des Enseignant·es du Supérieur (French Sociologists and Academics Association, ASES) and the Association Française de Science Politiqu

The Association Française de Sociologie (French Sociological Association, AFS), the Association des Enseignant·es du Supérieur (French Sociologists and Academics Association, ASES) and the Association Française de Science Politique (French Association of Political Science, AFSP) are the three main sociology and political science academic societies in France. They have always stood for academic freedom research independence as principles. For many years now, they have been supporting sociologist and scientist Pinar Selek, attacked and threatened on account of her research.

Exiled in France since the end of 2011, Pinar Selek has defended her PhD thesis at the University of Strasbourg, where she was granted academic protection. She then was welcome at the École Normale where she was made a honoris causa doctor in 2013, then at the University of Côte d’Azur where she has held tenure as an associate professor in the Sociology and Demography Department since 2022. Since then, she has been conducting research on migrations at the URMIS. She is also the Co-chair of the Migration Observatory in the Alpes-Martimes. Pinar Selek obtained the refugee status in 2013 and the nationality in 2017.

At the end of the 1990’s, then a sociology student at the University of Istanbul, Pinar Selek worked on the of minorities in Turkey. Arrested in 1998, she was tortured and imprisoned for two years for refusing to provide the names of Kurdish activists she had interviewed during her research. Pinar Selek is officially accused of having committed a bomb attack on Istanbul’s spice market. Such accusation was dismissed by many experts, who showed that the explosion was the result of an accidental gas leak. Sued for a crime she was declared —four times— not guilty of by acquittal, Pinar Selek suffers from real and political persecution.

By suing our colleague, the Turkish government is also attacking the independence of research and freedoms. The three academic societies stand in full solidarity with our colleague in facing the persecution she is the victim of. Through her, they defend academic freedom, the autonomy of researchers, and the independence of research —an essential value, stated in the Magna Charta Universitatum, since 1988 in Bologna, and signed again by 960 universités from 94 pays in 2020.
